Scottish Fashion Awards 2011

Well Howdy Obscurites!!

It has been all go here at the House of Obscurity over the past few weeks, we have been busy, busy bees..

Tuesday 14th June – Scottish Fashion Awards’s Eve

Its the day before the big day, but there’s still a load of work to get through.  So here we are at our lovely studio, Debbie is kntting, the girls (Leelah, Flora, Eilidh and Louise) are all working serenely – spraying fabric with paints using an airbrushing machine, making stud stamps and perfecting our grenades.  Lynds and myself are running up and down the staris in various states of disarray frantically screaming, “Is this better???” “Has anyone seen those Spanx????”

Once we were satisfied with our choices we packed up the car to take garment options over to the science centre so the celebs could have a choice for the night.  It was great to get a sneaky peek, the centre was bustling as we pulled up, the red carpet was down and there were people everywhere getting set up.  Downstairs we unpacked our pieces and grabbed a rail to set them up, glad to see fellow nominees Marc Ross and William Chambers and have a quick chat.

The Hour was there and we did an interview with them – still newbies at this game we were nervous, it’s hard.  We are learning though and becoming more and more relaxed, ahem.  After that we nipped outside and did another interview with Real Radio, the temptation to say “Ahm a reeeeal winner” was almost too much to handle.  He asked us “Apart from the award, what else are you most looking forward to?” to which the bold Lyndsay responded, “Getting drunk” hahaaa - he just said, “Don’t worry I’ll edit that out”.

Wednesday 15th June – Scottish Fashion Awards

Well it’s the big day!!  My lovely wife went out to get here hair remastered, the wonderful Ashley at John Quinn is a genius and has been dealing with Lyndsay’s amazing rainbow mop for years.  I went to Pout to get my talons tended to.  I love Pout.  At first its a bit scary, all these turbo tanned, backcombed girls, the overwhelming wallpaper and acetone smells – it’s a sensory overload, but the girls are awesome and if you like a bit of trashtastic this is THE place to be.

When in doubt, Pout....

Then we met up at the studio and cracked open a bottle of bubbly.  Kaeliegh Wallace came in to do our faces (and bodies) which was amazing.  Our friend and business guru Dave Young (Whitey) was coming with us to the ceremony and we had asked that he come get ready with us, girly style, we had made him a special gold leather skinny tie and he looked really amazing.  Dave is pretty amazing and has helped us so much even before the launch of Obscure Couture.

We were met at the red carpet with screams and whoops, our parents and family of course. They all looked super sharp, the dads especially stole the show in kilts and Vivienne Westwood.  We had to wait to be ushered down the red carpet, stop and pose for all these cameras then an interview with Rosa Zambonini for the Hour.  We caught up with Rosa after and she is reeeeeally lovely she told us that Laura Whitmore had came in wearing Obscure Couture Conchae Dress and Throacic Coat, SCORE.

We all headed in and were met with a much needed cocktail, we took one each and then asked what they were, “Oh those are non alcoho..” “..we need something stronger!”  We bumped into Iona Crawford who was our mentor when we first started out and was also up for Young Designer, she looked great in one of her own designs, Marc Ross, also looking very good.  Everyone looked great, I can’t start going on about it or this post will never end.  Special mention goes to Laura McMonagle who looked superb, we loved her outfit and was impressed when she told us her and a firend had made it.

The first award was Young Designer, staight away we were confronted with Obscure Couture on the big screen in the Imax, hats of to Henrietta Ludgate who took the (very beautiful and sparkling – it was crystal spikes!!!!) award.  After my dad asked her if he could take a picture of me holding her award hahahaaaa!!  David Gandy was sitting just along from us and everytime he walked past we did grabby bum hands and bites behind him.

In between each award they played a video, the video featured soley Obscure Couture garments, we were blown away – they looked SO good!! It was quite surreal seeing all these icons, Sam Cam, DSB, Rankin, Hilary Alexander to name but a few.

Lyndsay and her sister Rebecca headed to the ladies and found themselves cubicled next to Dame Shirley Bassey who was a tad flustered trying to get the toilet to work, “this flush won’t work, I don’t have anywhere to dry my hands” at least we now know she washes them after, no handshake fear there.

Dinner was good, we graciously posed as losers for a few pics then stuffed our faces.  The goodie bags were full to the brim with excellentus goodies, swarovski bags, Martin Mageila perfume, Organic Surge moisturiser (which we now LURVE), shower gel and scrub, nail transfers, face wipes, scarfs and the obligatory caramel wafers.  We all got a bit tipsy and by the time desert was served we were all screaming about the edible swarovski crystal.  It was past midnight when we had finished eating and the Swarovski (how many times am I going to write that?) show came on.  It was quite incredible, the dresses were a tonne weight and Eunice had to be escorted, very slowly, round at the end in the glittering full length gown.  Top Drawer!

The after party was good, we were asked for a pic, my dad put his (actually ours) bag down and a bottle of wine rolled out and hit the photographer on the foot, paahahaaaa, that amused Lynds and myself for quite a wee while..

Our friend and knitter extroidinare, Debbie turned up in our black lace Maxilla gown and I nearly cried, she looked so unbelievably gorgeous.   We bumped into Louise Gray and had a chat with her, she loved Lyndsay’s hair and my trashy nails so we got along just fine.  She gave us some pearls of wisdom and hopefully we can keep in touch, it’s alway good getting feedback on new collections especially from someone who’s work we really love.   Lyndsay managed to catch up with the creative director of Bobbi Brown who loved our stuff and said he would like to work with us which is bloody brilliant really.

Had a quick chat with Tessa Hartmann before we left, Tessa really is doing something amazing for Scottish Fashion, it lets us get recognition which before would have been sooooo much more dificult, also it’s putting us on the map fashion-wise.   Tessa gave us a cuddle and told us to keep going and always strive for more.

After all this we headed home, well not really, we headed to Alan Moore of ten30′s studio for more drinks and hilarity with Debbers and Judy Clark, always crazy fun when we get together but can’t really remember much apart from Alan and I having the EXACT same hair doo!

Love to watch you leave...
